Think of it this way, one of the reasons a KMG grinder itself costs so much is the precision. Most of us do not have several 100-200K CNC machines to engineer that same precision into a clone! With the machine running does the belt track well under load or not? If so it almost has to be the arm or the tracking pivot.
If I had $500 to spend on a grinder, I'd definitely build a KMG clone again though. If you don't kind taking some time scrounging for expensive bits like a 3ph motor and maybe a VFD, and if you have some fabrication skills, you'll end up with a MUCH better grinder. I built my KMG clone almost 10 years ago now and it's still running strong.
It's a KMG clone kit, but doesn't come close to the smoothness of my KMG. Makes a big difference when you start getting close to the finish line. Once you add the expense of a quality 8" to 10" contact wheel, arm, adjustable square rest, small radius wheels and yoke, you are going to be getting closer to the price of a higher grade grinder.

Belt grinders allow you to switch the wheel size to a number of different diameters, making it easy to apply your desired radius of hollow grind on a blade. Depending on the size of your current belts, the 2x72 may be quite a bit more surface area then what you have now. This means the belts last longer. 1.
However today I was grinding something and as the grinder winds down I hear this tick, tick. noise! So pulled the belt and put on a new one. Still hear it! Stopped and pulled the new belt and put the old belt back on. Still hear the tick tick and now it is getting louder. So I don't think it is the belt but, checked the seam and it appears OK!

Cory with Custom Eyes Machining has quoted me a KMG grinder clone for $530.00 CAD ea. I think this is a pretty good price for the chassis, base plate, tooling arm, platen, and work rest.

Rob Frink of Beaumont Metal Works in Columbus, Ohio designed and built the favoured KMG-1 grinder.
The rough grinding on a small 3" knife can literally take two minutes, if the grinds and center are scribed ahead of time, with the 1 1/2" horsepower KMG and a Blaze belt. I never regret the $1500 or so, or the other hundreds in accessories so far.
I have scoured google for the specs on a kmg 2x72, but can't seem to find much info at all. I plan to build a clone of the kmg and need to know the specs. If someone could post a link or share some info it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Gary
