My current mill is a Gorton 0-18a which has a rather small table but makes a Bridgeport look like a wet noodle as far as ridgidity. It does have its limitations but is such a nice machine I'll probably never part with it willingly. Gorton's have several different tapers also, I lucked out as it has a nmtb30 taper.

I am looking at some vertical mills. One of them is a Gorton 0-16. It seems like most of the info available online is for the 0-16a. with no discussion of the difference. My main concern is the Gorton taper collets. At 1/2" max size, that is a fairly important limitation.
My HMS started out with a lot of metal fabrication experience geared toward 4 wheel drive fabrication. I bought an old Gorton 0-16a vertical mill and found I really enjoyed machining. The good things about this machine are: carriage and cross slide have virtually no play or backlash. The headstock is quiet and no noticeable vibration.

That you are limited to a ½" end mill doesn't necessarily tell us that you have a mill that won't take a cut. An 0-16A Gorton, for example, is so limited, but it's still very much a serious mill and can take a cut far beyond what you're talking about. Soft cast iron has very low tensile strength, thus it is easy to machine.

I have a Gorton 0-16a, manual lists it weight at just north of 3k lbs, w/ no tracer head.
The 1943 catalog lists a model 15-C vertical mill for large/heavy work; the 1950 version shows some other heavy duty mills. The Guide Book (1946) is a general reference for all the products, and includes some simple HowTo's for pantograph usage, custom machines, etc.
I'm on the Gorton band wagon too (I've got a Mastermil 1-22). I like mine a lot. Something to think about with the 0-16A is the spindle speeds. The slowest spindle speed on this machine is 700 rpm, and I don't think it has back gears. My first mill was a …
